What it is

The C18 is an in-line six, four-stroke-cycle diesel. Bore is 145 mm, stroke 183 mm, and displacement 18.1 liters.1

The ACERT version comes turbocharged and aftercooled or twin turbocharged and aftercooled. Cat lists it at 4,000 lb.1

How it runs

The C18 spans Cat's whole duty ladder. Its ratings run from an A rating of 460 mhp at 1,800 rpm to E ratings of 1,015 and 1,150 mhp at 2,300 rpm.2

Cat's A rating is unrestricted continuous duty. Its E rating, high performance, allows rated load and rated speed up to 8 percent of the time, at up to a 30 percent load factor.2

For commercial work Cat offered high-performance ratings of 814 to 1,015 mhp at 2,100 to 2,300 rpm.3

What it's good for

Marlin calls the C18 a popular engine for sport-fishing applications, with a range of 1,015 to 1,150 mhp at 2,300 rpm.4

Trade-offs

The top ratings are high-performance ratings, and Cat's E rating assumes 250 to 1,000 hours of running a year.1,2

Cat's D rating, intermittent duty, allows rated load and speed up to 16 percent of the time. Cat's 2015 pleasure-craft guide lists the C18's D rating at 814 mhp at 2,100 rpm.1,2
