What it is

MTU presented the first Series 4000 marine engine at the SMM exhibition in Hamburg in 1996. The M73 and M93 yacht versions come in 12, 16 and 20 cylinders and cover 2,340 to 4,300 kW (3,140 to 5,770 bhp).2,3

The 16V 4000 M93L is rated at 3,440 kW (4,651 bhp) at 2,100 rpm.1

How it runs

Sixteen cylinders with a 170 mm bore and 190 mm stroke displace 69.0 liters. Common rail injection feeds it, with a cylinder cutout system. Two water-cooled turbochargers charge it in sequence.1

At rated power the M93L burns 251.9 gallons an hour.1

What it's good for

MTU credits the M93 with a power-to-weight ratio that puts it at the top of its class for acceleration. Its typical work is fast yachts, fast patrol boats, police craft and fire-fighting vessels.1,2

Marlin describes the Series 4000 as typically found in much larger vessels.4

Trade-offs

Size is the cost. Dry, the 16V 4000 M93L weighs 9,600 kg (21,164 lbs) and runs 3,480 mm (137 in) long before its gearbox. A 16V 2000 M96L weighs 3,450 kg (7,606 lbs).1,5

Like the Series 2000 M96L, it is rated for fast vessels with low load factors.1,5
