What it is
How it runs
First gear multiplies torque for the hole shot, with minimal bow rise. The engine controller shifts to second on torque demand for cruise. In a multi-engine rig, each engine shifts on its own.2,3
With all shifting done in the transmission, the gearcase is only six inches in diameter. It turns dual contra-rotating propellers, four blades forward and three aft. In joystick mode the gearcase pivots up to 45 degrees each way, against about 30 for a traditional outboard. At operating speed the range drops back to about 30.2,3
What it's good for
Trade-offs
A Verado 600 weighs twice as much as a Verado 400. Trading four 400s for three 600s adds more than 1,000 pounds of engine.2
It retails in the range of $77,000, and an average propset costs about $3,300. Maintenance for 200 hours of running is done through a hatch in the top of the cowl; the cowl comes off at 1,000 hours or five years for plugs and the water pump.2,4
