Curt Whiticar built his first boat in Stuart in 1921, a 14-foot skiff paid for with paper-route money, and six by 1931; the 33-foot single-screw Shearwater followed. He incorporated Whiticar Boat Works with his brother-in-law John Dragseth in 1959 and built custom sportfishermen until he retired from full-time building in 1986. In 2020 the families separated the assets: John Whiticar kept the original Stuart yard, Jim Dragseth took Shearwater Marine.
