Craig Blackwell started building boats at sixteen in Bay City, Michigan, apprenticed five years with the Gougeon Brothers, worked at Monterey Marine in Florida and Davis Boatworks in North Carolina, and founded Blackwell Boatworks in Wanchese in 1988 with his wife Sandy. The yard has built more than sixty custom Carolina sportfishermen from 28 to 72 feet and is now run by his son Jeff Blackwell and Bow Meekins.
