Dick Bertram, a Miami yacht broker and offshore racer, founded Bertram Yacht in 1960 and premiered the fiberglass Bertram 31 at the 1961 New York boat show. Whittaker Corporation bought the company in 1968 and Ferretti Group in 1998. Ferretti moved production to Merritt Island in 2012 and stopped building there in 2014; the Gavio Group bought the assets in 2015 and reopened in the former Lazzara yard in Tampa in 2016.
